corporate manslaughter tips

David Bentley Miller is a specialst in Health & Saftey and Law training with
10 years experience in the field. David delivers our Health & Safety training and below are a few useful tips regarding our newest training course: Corporate Manslaughter.

1. Risk Assessments & Policies - Ensure that your Risk Assessments and associated policies and procedures are accurate and up to date. Consider outside assistance if you are unsure if you have the time or know-how to keep abreast of it all.

2.
Health & Safety - Ensure that Health & Safety is on the agenda at every board meeting and recorded in the minutes. Remember, the main purpose of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 is to ensure that Health and Safety is taken seriously at board level. This will serve as proof of the fact that Health & Safety is both discussed and taken seriously at board level.

3.Training Staff - Train your staff in your safety management procedures and practices. From the Directors right down to the worker who perhaps only does a few hours a week, all should be trained. This will ensure ‘buy-in’ and this in turn will add to the safe working culture of the business. A safer working environment for all will obviously reduce the chances of a workplace fatality.

Emily Hastie, Education and Admin Coordinator at ERIC, tells us about her first visit to Melrose Hall.

“I came to Melrose Hall to hold two one day training days for Health Care Pofessionals. I travelled from Bristol, and the speaker came from Leeds, so it was great for us that Melrose Hall is in such a good location and is easy to find . "

“The facilities were excellent, the meeting room was lovely and we had everything that we wanted and asked for. We were given friendly, helpful service and the lunches and refreshments were served on time.Staff members were very polite and the service was 100%
."

“I would return to Melrose Hall again - it was a lovely venue and the setting with excellent facilities, excellent food and refreshments, great parking and a wonderful overall experience.”

Introducing ...The Coach

One of the most common criticisms from employees about their employers is “poor communication”. They complain that their Managers give poor instructions, which causes misunderstanding, wasted time and energy that leads to frustration and resentment. They feel ill informed about what is happening in the company and often confused about what the company is trying to achieve.

So how can you the Manager overcome this in a practical and effective way that will lead to improving your team’s performance?

Give people factual information they need to do their jobs well such as:
>
policies and procedures they are expected to follow
> technical information required to do the job
> clear, unambiguous description of their job role and scope of the job
> the business’s overall aim and the main objectives including the  milestones for achieving these
> use of a common language that all parties understand

Give them information that motivates such as:
>
tell them what they have done well
targets and goals that need to be achieved
> feedback when they have and have not achieved
> thanks during team meetings
> regular one-one constructive feedback on their performance

Give them information about any changes that will affect them such as:
> discuss any changes as soon as is reasonable
> give timescales explain how it will impact on them
> allow time for information to ‘sink in’
> Be available for questions and encourage discussions

Walk the talk
Walk the job and talk to the people – listen more than you talk
Get to know your employees and show an interest in them
Don’t make promises you can’t keep
Reward suggestions made and treat them with respect
Respond to each suggestion - if you don’t take up an idea explain why

On a Personal Level

Neil Maidman : Health & Safety Manager

Neil is the Health & Safety (H&S) Manager for t2

How long have you worked here? Just over 5 years

Responsibilities:Vetting and Monitoring work placements, H&S Risk Assessments, Staff Inductions, plus, at present some business development work.

What you like most about your job?: The wide variety of work placements that we deal with, and as part of my role, helping small businesses (and some not so small) become more compliant with H&S laws and regulations. Trying to make H&S interesting and relevant to the client and not just a boring necessity.

Interesting Fact: Apart from working for t2, I help run the Blackwood Little Theater in Blackwood, Gwent. My latest production has been chosen to represent, Wales & GB at the Liverpool international Theatre Festival in Nova Scotia, Canada in May 2008.
