New Scheme Enables First Step into Childcare

A new scheme in Cardiff is offering training and development in childcare, and gives the opportunity for a work placement during the current economical struggles.

t2 business solutions are offering youths and adults the chance to have an eight week in house induction to childcare, followed by a possible placement into the childcare field, and the opportunity to gain a Level 2 Children’s Care Learning and Development Modern Apprenticeship.

The programme, which is the first stepping stone to a career in childcare and a Level 2 Modern Apprenticeship, provides in-house key skills, including Application of Number and Communications.

All students will be trained by a qualified assessor with over 12 years experience in various childcare settings. Susan Donoghue, Childcare Team Leader at t2 business solutions, is also working towards her PGCE.

Talking about the scheme, Susan said: “This new scheme is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in childcare as a career. The programme gives students underpinning knowledge of the sector and sets them in good stead to get a placement, which is something we will help them to achieve.

“During the programme, we mix a variety of aspects including theoretical and practical activities, health and safety information, child protection, communication skills and an introduction into IT. We also encourage learners to share their experiences within childcare, to increase awareness of the sector.”

Just launched, the pilot scheme, based in t2’s head office in St. Mellons, Cardiff, is aimed to give youths and adults the career start they need. Anyone aged 16 plus, who are eligible for funding from Welsh Assembly Government and are interested in a career in childcare, are welcomed.

The initial eight week pilot will allow t2 to see how well the scheme will run. Should it be successful, t2 aims to launch the childcare centre to everyone in September. After the eight week induction process, CRB checks will be made for each participant, and t2 then sources a work placement for participants in their locality.

Rob Marr, Managing Director of t2 business solutions said: “t2 are very excited about this new scheme, and are looking forward to seeing the impact it will have. The current economic climate is affecting many people, and with so many looking for work, only those who are qualified are succeeding.

“This programme will help those who are looking to be a part of the childcare sector. They will not only receive the training and induction into the roles that are required, but they will also receive help in finding a work placement at the end of the eight weeks. We wish all our participants the best during the pilot scheme and are looking to launch the centre in full in September.”

Initially, the pilot is an 8 week induction into childcare, Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 4.30pm. t2 is, however, offering a more flexible option for students who have no childcare provision options. t2 also supplies all the resources required to participate in the scheme, including all course materials, a dedicated training room and an IT suite.
