Having completed level one in Numeracy, Ada is currently studying towards her Level 1 Literacy – once achieved she plans to up her skills to level 2 in both subjects. Ada also marked the 100,000th learner awards with learndirect earlier this year for her same achievements.
Ada says, “I was so surprised when I heard I had won another award – I wanted to scream, I didn’t think anyone would care about the work I have done on my basic skills because it is what is expected of you”
Taken out of mainstream school because she couldn’t keep up, Ada was then put into special school but left school with no qualifications.
“As time went by I decided I wanted to improve my basic skills – not only to help with day to day life but to improve my confidence” says Ada. She called into the t2 training centre in newport and started a level one numeracy qualification, Ada says “once I started learning, I didn’t want to stop.”
“I started seeing the benefits from day one – but the most noticeable difference is being able to count money accurately as this had been causing me embarrassment in the past. The most rewarding is being able to help my daughter with her homework.”
Nathan Spruce is Ada’s personal tutor, he said “There is no one more worthy of this award – Ada has achieved so much and this is largely down to her enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to learning. Ada was always looking for time to learn even if it was only 30 minutes. She deserves her award not only for what she has achieved herself but for the inspiration she has been to other learners.”
Rob Marr, Managing Director at t2 says “I think it’s fantastic that learners like Ada are being recognised for their achievements – it takes a great deal of courage to admit that you need help with your basic skills and at t2 we full support that. Helping Ada achieve some of her goals has been extremely fulfilling for us, we look forward to working with her to achieve them all.”
Ada has offered her advice to anyone thinking of going back to learning – “Go for it! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!”
